Preparing the Substrate

Prepare a substrate by using materials such as tissue napkins, paper towels, or cotton swabs—anything capable of retaining moisture. Soak the substrate in a solution of hydrogen peroxide to disinfect it. Place the seeds on the moistened substrate in a single layer, then cover with a second layer of the same substrate. This step ensures that the seeds remain moist during the stratification process.

Stratification Process

Place the entire prepared structure in a plastic bag or container. Store it in the refrigerator’s vegetable compartment, where the temperature is maintained between 5-7°C. Supervise the stratification process closely, ventilating the contents of the bag periodically to ensure proper air circulation. Inspect the seeds regularly and add moisture to the substrate as needed to maintain optimal conditions.

Transplanting and Growing Seedlings

Once the seeds have sprouted, transplant them into seedling pots or peat tablets. Optimal growing conditions for rose seedlings include a room temperature between 18-20°C. To protect seedlings from black leg, provide them with 10 hours of light daily and gently layer perlite over the soil surface. This helps prevent excess moisture and supports healthy growth.

Watering Seedlings

Roses require careful watering, as excessive moisture can lead to seedling death. Maintain a balance by providing moderate water to encourage healthy growth without overwatering. Pay attention to the soil's moisture content and adjust your watering routine accordingly.

Root Development and Hardening Off

To ensure the development of a strong root system and encourage the first buds to break, place pots of seedlings in a quiet, well-lit area. Avoid direct sunlight initially, gradually exposing them to open air to harden them off. As the seedlings become more established, progressively increase their exposure to the outdoors to toughen them for the garden.
